MOD-FX is an effect plugin consisting of seven different effect modules, four LFOs, and a whole sequencer. These seven effect modules are ring mod, a wave folder, feedback engine, noise, an analog filter, a motion field, a granular model, and a signal shop. Below that, four LFOs, which when you route these to whichever effect you like, it adds its own movement. Some of these modules are based off of real hardware synths and Eurorack modules, and they actually do sound like them.

Ring Mod

The ring mod is an advanced tremolo, and it’s kind of based around the CS-80’s ring mod feature. It has three different sliders: depth, speed, and wobble. There are also four different sync modes and a morph knob that morphs between four different waveform types: sine, triangle, pulse, and noise.

Wave Folder

The wave folder is like a harmonic distortion. Most distortions, when it gets to a certain point, it’s going to clip. But with the wave folder, it actually folds and it adds some nice sort of harmonics to your sound. Once you actually modulate that and you add some LFOs to that, you can get some crazy stuff.

Feedback Engine

The feedback engine has four different delay types: digital, tape, BBD, and reverse. The reverse mode can create reverse delays, while the loop function can micro loop whatever’s being put into it. The age knob adds a bit crush effect and detune to give the delay a more vintage sound.

Noise

The noise module has five different noise types: white, red, brown, pink, and blue noise. Each one has a different character, from more low-end presence to added grit and brighter digital textures.

Analog Filter

The analog filter has cutoff, resonance, and drive, along with four different filter modes based off real synths: Minimoog, SEM, Juno, and Prophet. Modulating the filter can create much more extreme results.

Motion Field

Motion Field combines an advanced panner effect with a granularizer. You can control the number of voices, rate, overlap, and pan width, while the granular section lets you adjust granules, size, and octaves.

Signal Shop

Signal Shop is an advanced resampling engine. You can change the speed and octave of the incoming sound, while the splice button lets you grab a chop of up to four seconds and manipulate its mix, octave, and speed.

The effects can also work together as a complete signal path. You can freely reorder the effects, completely transforming the sound as you change the order. The idea is that you can genuinely break your sound, similar to the experience of using real modular gear, analog gear, and pedals.

The randomize feature can instantly create completely different sounds, and the plugin can transform your audio even before getting into the LFOs and sequencer.

LFOs

The plugin has four LFOs with sine, triangle, square, sawtooth, and random waveforms. Every single parameter of the effects can be modulated, and you can also modulate one LFO with another.

Sequencer

The sequencer can control every effect and parameter. You can adjust things like filter cutoff, feedback, rate, and ring mod speed, while also changing the direction or randomizing the sequence.

You can use the sequencer with the LFOs separately or combine them, creating endless creative opportunity with the plugin.

MOD-FX 1.5 comes with over 240 presets, but you can also build your own patches or simply hit randomize to generate something new.
