Ardour 9 is the latest major version of the open-source, cross-platform digital audio workstation used for recording, editing, mixing, and mastering audio and MIDI. Version 9.0 represents one of the most substantial updates in the project’s history, adding workflow-driven features, enhanced editing tools, and productivity-focused updates across macOS, Windows, and Linux.

Ardour’s core is still a fully featured multitrack DAW with non-destructive editing, flexible routing, advanced automation, and broad plugin support, but version 9 expands its capabilities in ways that bring it closer to contemporary DAWs while preserving its deeply customizable, open-source ethos.

Dedicated MIDI And Piano Roll Editing

One of the most notable additions in Ardour 9 is dedicated piano roll windows for MIDI editing. You can double-click on a MIDI region to open a separate window — or a pane attached to the main timeline — where you edit MIDI notes, velocity, and CC data with precision. This approach reduces visual clutter and brings focused control to MIDI workflows previously less accessible in Ardour.

Ardour 9 also introduces note brushing, letting you draw repeating MIDI patterns quickly with modifier keys, and enhancements to the cue sequencer’s piano-roll-style editing.

Clip-Focused Recording And Region-Level Effects

Version 9 adds a cue recording system that lets you record audio or MIDI directly into slots with fixed bars or open-ended loop capture, making Ardour useful for creative looping workflows without additional routing.

Another impactful update is Region FX, which allows you to apply plugins and automation directly to an individual audio region instead of the whole channel strip. These effects are processed offline when the region is read from disk, so they move with the region on the timeline and don’t add extra DSP load.

Real-Time Analysis And Expanded Workflow Tools

Ardour 9 includes a real-time perceptual analyzer that visualizes live spectral content and can overlay multiple track or bus spectrums for mix diagnosis.

Shortly after the initial release, Ardour 9.1 introduced MIDI note chase (so notes play even when playback starts mid-note) and MIDI note duplication for rapid pattern editing, along with additional workflow and region drag enhancements.
