What is the MAMMOTH – ToneX Pack, Exactly?

The Alter Amp Works’ MAMMOTH is an all-in-one bundle that combines every ToneX amp capture the company has ever released. In essence, it’s a digital library containing over 300 sonic snapshots of 23 different legendary and boutique guitar amplifiers.

These aren’t just simple emulations. Each “capture” is created using IK Multimedia’s AI Machine Modeling technology, which records the precise sonic behavior of the real hardware. This includes the amp, the speaker cabinet, the microphones used, and their positions, resulting in a highly authentic playing experience.

The Core Strength: A Curated Library of Iconic Amps

What truly sets MAMMOTH apart is its enormous variety. The collection is a “greatest hits” of guitar amplification. In my testing, I found tones suitable for any session.

The amps are logically organized and cover the full spectrum:

• British Classics: Featuring the iconic crunch and chime of amps like the 1987 Marshall Silver Jubilee and the Orange Rockerverb 100 MKIII.
• American Cleans & Edge-of-Breakup: Models like the Divided by 13 FTR-37 and Dr. Z Stangray provide spanky, articulate tones perfect for country, funk, and blues.
• Boutique Gems: This is where the pack shines. Captures of rare amps like the Sampson Era Matchless Chieftain and Tyler Amp Works PT-14 offer unique character you won’t find elsewhere.
• High-Gain & Metal: For heavier styles, the Soldano Hot Rod 50 Plus and other aggressive models deliver tight, articulate distortion that cuts through a dense mix.

Sound Quality in Practice: How Does it Feel to Play?

Beyond the list of amps, the most critical factor is the sonic fidelity. I loaded the captures into my DAW using the ToneX plugin and was immediately impressed. The captures are designed to be neutral and balanced, providing a perfect starting point for your own EQ and effects.

For example, when I pulled up the Morgan AC20 Deluxe capture and played with a Stratocaster, the dynamic response was stunning. Playing softly yielded a warm, clean tone with beautiful harmonic complexity. Digging in with the pick brought out that classic “edge-of-breakup” chime without any harshness. This level of nuance is what separates professional captures from amateur ones.

How to Get the Most Out of the MAMMOTH Pack

Integrating these captures into your workflow is straightforward.

1. Load the Capture: Open the IK Multimedia ToneX plugin (or your Quad Cortex/Kemper) and navigate to the Alter Amp Works MAMMOTH folder.
2. Choose Your Foundation: Select an amp that matches the genre you’re working in (e.g., Marshall for rock, Dr. Z for country).
3. Audition Mic/Cab Variations: Each amp folder contains multiple captures. Experiment with these to find the one that best fits your mix. Some are brighter, some are darker, reflecting different microphone choices.
4. Pair with Impulse Responses (IRs): For ultimate control, you can bypass the cabinet portion of the capture and use your own third-party IRs. This allows for endless tonal shaping.
5. Save Your Favorites: Create presets within your plugin for quick access to your go-to tones.
