Alter Amp Works THE BIG CAT [TONEX]

• Product: THE BIG CAT

Opening ToneX and scrolling through the profiles was a bit like wandering through a guitar museum. Every capture felt deliberate, with the warmth and bite of each original amp faithfully preserved. The Cub V EL84 was chimey and bright, perfect for pop-rock, while the Hot Cat grabbed the mids just right for that crunchy blues tone. I ended up layering a couple profiles in parallel and, honestly, it felt like I’d plugged straight into a boutique studio rig.

The free lifetime updates seal the deal. I know new amps will land in my library without me paying a cent extra — it keeps things fresh and gives me confidence this pack will grow with my music.

What Makes It Fun to Play With

• Huge amp playground: 170+ captures means you’ll always find a tone that sparks ideas.
• Authentic response: Each amp reacts realistically to dynamics, picking, and gain tweaks.
• Versatile styles: Jazz, rock, blues, or metal — there’s a profile for each.
• Value-packed: $180 for this many profiles is hard to beat, especially with updates.

Navigating the pack is surprisingly intuitive. ToneX’s interface makes it easy to audition profiles quickly, so you spend more time playing and less time scrolling.

The Nitty-Gritty

Installation was painless — a few clicks and I was exploring tones. The captures are detailed; every nuance is there: harmonic warmth, tight low end, bell-like highs. Playing leads, you get that natural touch sensitivity; for rhythm, the amps sit nicely in a mix without fighting your track.

One minor note: if you only want a handful of Bad Cat tones, it might feel like a lot at first. But I actually appreciated having the full range to experiment with — the “discovery” aspect is half the fun.

Bottom Line

THE BIG CAT ToneX Capture Pack is a boutique guitar amp experience compressed into a ToneX-friendly collection. The sheer number of profiles, combined with quality and ongoing updates, makes this a must-have for any guitarist looking for serious tonal variety. Layer, tweak, experiment — it’s an amp closet you can carry in your laptop. Hear demos and grab your own copy at the official Alter Amp Works page.
