Introducing Maize: The Authentic Markbass PP-10 Parametric Equalizer Plugin

Maize, the official recreation of the renowned PP10 EQ by Markbass, is a powerful VST/VST3/AAX/AU Acqua plugin that faithfully replicates the behavior and sound of its hardware counterpart. Inspired by classic equalizers from the 1970s and 80s, the PP10 EQ is a solid-state parametric equalizer known for its exceptional musicality and precision. Acustica has collaborated with Markbass to bring this extraordinary product to the pro audio sector, offering qualities rarely found in today’s EQ market.

Meticulously Crafted Sound Sculpting Tool Maize embodies all the key features of the PP10 EQ, making it an incredibly musical and precise equalizer. With 10 bands, each offering 19 selectable frequencies, a gain pot for cuts and boosts (-16 to +16dB), and a rotary control for adjusting the bell width (Q) from 0.3 to 6.0, Maize provides unparalleled versatility. Notably, its high Q value allows for very narrow bells, enabling fine-tuned surgical corrections in the frequency spectrum. While it excels in mastering applications, Maize truly shines during the mixing phase when sculpting and correcting the sound of instruments.

Faithful Replication with Unique Sonic Personality Maize faithfully replicates all aspects of the PP10 EQ, resulting in an esoteric equalizer with its own distinct sonic personality. Its linear frequency response and phase extend to the extremes of each band, even reaching near DC in the low range. This level of linearity grants Maize exceptional shaping potential. Each adjustment can be precisely calibrated in decibels, especially during subtractive processing. Acustica was so impressed by the PP10 unit that it couldn’t resist creating a digital version while adding extra features for enhanced versatility. These include control-link, M-S processing, switchable preamps (solid-state and vacuum tube), in-out meters, band activation buttons, and oversampling options for the preamp section.

A Fascinating History The PP10 stereo equalizer originated as a prototype in 2006 when Markbass sought to create a precision equalizer. The acronym “PP” stands for “Pure Precision.” To ensure its exceptional quality, Markbass enlisted the expertise of Rodolfo “Foffo” Bianchi, one of Italy’s most accomplished producers and sound engineers. With decades of experience shaping Italy’s music history, Foffo’s involvement helped create a state-of-the-art equalizer that was meticulously designed, optimally engineered, and built with top-notch components.

However, the pursuit of absolute quality led to unforeseen challenges during the project’s development. The high production costs made it difficult to market the unit commercially. Markbass faced a crucial decision about venturing into the pro audio field and carefully weighed their options. Ultimately, they set aside the project to evaluate potential risks at both an entrepreneurial and commercial level.

Only two units were ever created. One remains in the possession of the Bianchi family, while the other belongs to renowned sound engineer Sabino Cannone. Thanks to Acustica’s development of the Maize plugin, sound engineers can finally enjoy the benefits of this exceptional product that is both unique and nearly impossible to find in the non-digital realm.

With Maize, you can now experience the authentic sound and versatility of the Markbass PP-10 EQ right from your digital audio workstation. Whether you’re mastering or mixing, Maize provides an unparalleled tool for sculpting your sound with precision and musicality.
