The OmniDr1ve was originally a simple low-frequency distortion unit with a frequency crossover that allowed you to set a breakpoint and drive only the frequencies above it. Since then, the idea has evolved. We added an inverse crossover so you can drive only the low frequencies and then add a single-key chorus effect to create a dynamic feel.

Things get more interesting when we start thinking of OmniDr1ve as a spatial processor. Drivers are a great way to decorrelate signals—so we’ve built a surround mixer, scalable up to 9.1.6.

OmniDrive is a stereo input, multi-channel output decorrelation tool that doesn’t upmix; instead, it routes the driver’s audio to multi-channel locations and allows you to change equalization, delay time, and phase for various channel pairs.

A surround mixer built around drive functionality.

The mixer can discretely route to any surround channel. Want to keep the front L/R completely clean? Press PassThru, and the raw signal will remain unchanged in the front, while the surround channels only carry the drive signal.

Each surround channel has its own delay, up to 500ms, plus the offset between each pair of left and right channels. This can be used to open up spatial and environmental effects in a decorrelational way—or to push towards more creative effects.

LFE has its own subwoofer synthesis engine, so the subwoofer gets a unique low-end signal that complements the main channels instead of repeating them—avoiding the phase cancellation that can occur when the same low frequencies arrive at both channels simultaneously in a bass-managed consumer system.

We went a step further, adding phase rotations from 0° to 180° to each channel. Four cascaded all-pass filters distributed across the frequency range produce frequency-dependent phase shifts, decorrelatedizing the channels with other sound images. Phase as a tool for tension and release in surround sound? We think it has potential. Used cautiously, it opens up real creative territory; pushed too hard, it can ruin the mix in unpredictable ways—so experiment, but check your mix folds.

Everything can be automated.

Every parameter in OmniDr1ve responds to DAW automation—drive, crossover frequency, mix, output, per-channel surround fader, passThru, and phase rotation. Plot drive increases for build-up. Automated S-MIX faders push distortion from the center to the surround channels as tension increases. OmniDr1ve can be used as both a performance instrument and a surround mixing tool.
