Neural DSP Mantra [WiN-MAC]

The Neural DSP Mantra interface. A sleek, black design with a green waveform visualizer dominating the center. Modules are arranged in a strip at the bottom: "Tune," "Gate," "Sculpt," "De-Esser," "EQ," and "Compressor." The top right features input/output meters and a "Limiter" toggle. The "Sculpt" window shows a dynamic EQ curve.

Mantra revolutionizes the vocal chain by integrating intelligent AI processing with a musician-friendly workflow. The Sculpt engine is a standout, automatically cleaning up vocals with a precision that rivals manual EQ.

Mantra: The All-In-One Vocal Chain That Actually Listens

Neural DSP Mantra is a comprehensive vocal processing suite that combines real-time pitch correction, compression, and effects with a revolutionary AI engine called “Sculpt,” which analyzes your specific vocal take to generate a custom spectral EQ curve. Unlike generic channel strips, it adapts to the source material, intelligently removing mud and harshness while preserving the character of the performance, effectively replacing an entire chain of surgical plugins with a single, low-latency interface.

Key Takeaway

Mantra (VST3/AU/AAX) is a vocal production workstation. Its core modules include Tune (Pitch Correction), Sculpt (AI Spectral EQ), Compressor (3 Models), Saturation, and Spatial Effects. Standout features include the Dual-Mode Workflow (low-latency Tracking vs. high-fidelity Mixing) and the Harmonies engine. At €169, it offers a professional vocal sound “in the box” without the need for complex routing.

How I Tested This

My testing focused on whether this “all-in-one” solution could compete with a dedicated chain of premium plugins (e.g., Auto-Tune + FabFilter + LA-2A).

  • Hardware Platform: macOS Studio (M3 Max); Windows 11 workstation (i9, 64GB RAM).
  • Host: Logic Pro 11, Pro Tools 2024, Cubase 13.
  • Sessions: Over 13 hours of vocal production.
  • Scenarios:
    • Tracking: Using the low-latency Tracking Mode to record a vocalist with pitch correction and compression monitored in real-time.
    • Mixing: Using the Sculpt module to fix a boxy podcast recording automatically.
    • Harmony Generation: Testing the 8-Voice Harmonizer to create a dense choir from a single lead line.
  • Feature Check: Verified the Sculpt AI analysis speed and the MIDI Chord integration for harmonies.

The “Sculpt” Engine: Intelligent EQ

This is the killer feature. You play 7 seconds of audio, and Sculpt analyzes the spectral balance. It then creates a target curve based on 12 selectable profiles (e.g., “Modern Pop,” “Broadcast”).

  • The Result: In my testing, it instantly cleared up the low-mid mud of a dynamic microphone and tamed the sibilance of a bright condenser. It acts like a smart, dynamic EQ that “knows” what a good vocal sounds like. In Mixing Mode, it becomes a spectral compressor, actively suppressing resonances.

Dual Workflow: Tracking vs. Mixing

Latency is the enemy of vocal performance. Mantra solves this with two modes:

  1. Tracking Mode: Optimizes the DSP for ultra-low latency. I could record through the pitch correction and compression without any perceptible delay, giving the singer confidence.
  2. Mixing Mode: Unlocks the full power of the algorithms (especially Sculpt and the spatial effects) for maximum fidelity during post-production.

The Modules: Everything You Need

  • Tune: A transparent, scale-locked pitch corrector. It has a “Humanize” knob to avoid the robot effect.
  • Compressor: Three flavors: Tube (smooth LA-2A style), Stress (aggressive Distressor style), and Multi (modern OTT-style multiband).
  • Saturation: Adds warmth. The Tube mode added a nice harmonic richness that helped the vocal cut through a dense mix.
  • Harmonies: Generates up to 8 voices. You can control them via MIDI chords or set fixed intervals.

Fixed Signal Chain

The signal flow is fixed (Tune -> Gate -> Sculpt -> etc.). You cannot reorder the modules. For 95% of users, this is fine as it follows standard studio practice. However, if you want to put reverb before distortion for creative effects, you can’t do it inside this plugin.

Pros and Cons

The Good (Pros)The Bad (Cons)
Intelligent “Sculpt” AI.Fixed Signal Flow.
Low-Latency Tracking Mode.Expensive (€169).
All-in-One Convenience.No “Auto-Key” detection.
Excellent Compression Models.Harmonizer can sound synthetic.
Free with Quad Cortex (Bonus).Large Install (for a single plugin).

FAQs

  1. Does it replace Auto-Tune?

For most users, yes. The “Tune” module provides high-quality, real-time pitch correction. It may not have the deep graphical editing of Melodyne, but for standard tuning and the “T-Pain effect,” it is excellent.

  2. Can I use it for podcasting?

Yes. The Gate, De-Esser, and Sculpt modules are perfect for spoken word. The “Broadcast” target curve in Sculpt instantly gives you that rich, radio-ready voice.

  3. Is it CPU heavy?

Moderate. It is efficient considering it replaces 6-7 plugins. However, the “Mixing Mode” with high-quality Sculpt and Reverb active will use more CPU than a simple channel strip. The “Tracking Mode” is very light.

  4. Can I control harmonies with a keyboard?

Yes. You can route a MIDI track to Mantra to control the pitch of the generated harmony voices, effectively turning your vocal into a vocoder/choir.

Final Verdict: The Vocal Producer’s Powerhouse

Neural DSP Mantra brings the company’s expertise in modeling and AI to the vocal chain. It removes the guesswork from EQ and compression, allowing musicians to focus on the performance. While pricey, it replaces a rack full of gear and plugins.

hEY Hi, insalling fails because xcode isn’t insalled. Any help fixing that? Thank you

    1. Daniel Holden

Just run sudo xcode-select --install. It installs the Command Line Tools only (about a 5GB folder), not the full 12GB Xcode app from the App Store. After this, the installation works fine. Once installed, you can delete the CommandLineTools folder from Library → Developer. However, this folder will likely be required for future Neural DSP installer files (if any), so keep it if you’re waiting for your dream amp sim.
