PSP has updated its PSP 42, based on that classic Lexicon PCM 42. Version 2 models the hardware’s audio path more precisely and lets you choose how much of the original unit’s character you want to use. It also adds up to 28800 ms of delay time and an adjustable high cut filter frequency, plus a whole bunch more.
Of the four processing types, Clean is just a clean digital delay with no emulations at all. Legacy is like the old PSP 42, with the tape saturator from the original built in. Lims has the input and pre-A/D opto limiters from the hardware, and Full adds the A/D and D/A converter modeling to those limiters.
Engaging the DLYx2 button doubles the selected delay time by cutting the sample rate in half, which also creates a lo-fi effect by affecting the frequency range of the delayed signal. The feedback invert button inverts the phase of the feedback signal, which isn’t really audible on long delay times but can alter the sound of short ones when you flip that phase. The depth knob sets how much the internal sample rate is affected by the modulation signal, a combination of the LFO and envelope detector, and the waveform knob switches the LFO between sine and square.
The wow tape preset has the LFO drifting the delay time, with the high cut in to simulate a tape delay, and wiper has that really slow LFO oscillation, a phasey, hollow sound. This unit is capable of all kinds of classic effects, and big kudos to PSP for updating the plug-in. I really enjoy using it.
