The Crow Hill Company’s Key FX is a standalone multi-effect plugin (VST/AU/AAX) that extracts the popular performance effects—Glitch, Distort, and Freeze—from their flagship percussion libraries (like Concussion Drums) and makes them universally available. Its core philosophy is “performance-led design,” allowing you to trigger and “play” these effects momentarily via MIDI, rather than just using static automation. After three weeks of testing, I’ve found it’s an incredibly intuitive and musical tool for sound designers and live performers, but it presents a questionable value for anyone who already owns Concussion Drums.

Unlocking “Buried” Effects

The “a-ha” moment with Key FX is realizing what it’s for. Crow Hill’s best creative effects (Glitch, Distort, Freeze) were, until now, “buried” inside their percussion instruments like Concussion and Circuit Drums. You could only use them on the drums, or by using complicated audio routing into the plugin.

Key FX “extracts” and “democratizes” this effects philosophy. This isn’t just another multi-effects plugin; it’s a new, performance-led instrument.

This is its key differentiator from competitors like Effectrix or Serato Hex FX. Those are primarily automation-driven step-sequencers. Key FX is designed to be played. I spent an hour in Ableton with a synth pad held down, using my right hand to “play” the effects on a MIDI keyboard. I could trigger a 1/16th note stutter from the Glitch effect, add a momentary blast of saturation with the Distort effect, and then “catch” a 1-beat loop with the Freeze effect.

This is a massive pro for producers. It’s an immediate, musical, and tactile workflow that feels like playing an instrument, not programming a plugin.

Do You Already Own Concussion Drums?

This brings me to the plugin’s single biggest con: its value proposition for existing customers.

To test this, I loaded Key FX and Concussion Drums side-by-side. I routed a synth into Concussion’s audio input (a workaround I’ve used for months) to access its internal effects. I then ran the same synth into Key FX.

The verdict: The effects are sonically identical. The Glitch, Distort, and Freeze are the same brilliant algorithms.

This makes Key FX a “convenience” purchase for existing owners. Crow Hill is essentially asking you to pay £49 for the convenience of not having to use the audio routing workaround. For some, that’s worth it. For me, it feels like I’m being charged for a feature that should have been a free “breakout” plugin for existing customers.

A Niche Workflow, Brilliantly Executed

Key FX is a fantastic tool that brilliantly executes a specific, performance-led philosophy.

• If you are a live performer, a sound designer, or a producer who loves creative, hands-on effects and you do not own Concussion Drums, this is an absolute must-buy. It’s an inspiring and unique way to interact with your audio.
• If you are a mixing engineer, this is not for you. It’s a creative tool, not a corrective one.
• If you already own Concussion Drums, you already own these effects. You have to decide if the £49 is worth the convenience of having them in a standalone plugin.

It’s a niche workflow, but it’s one that I’ve found incredibly inspiring.
