The Yangqin, an instrument rich in expression and steeped in cultural heritage, is renowned for its ability to produce both soft and percussive sounds, a characteristic that sets it apart from its contemporaries. At the heart of this instrument lies a unique feature: the hammers are crafted from bamboo, imbuing each strike with a distinct and captivating tonal quality that resonates with the essence of Chinese tradition.

Three-Body Technology’s approach to Raindrop & Blade is a masterful fusion of reverence for the past and a bold embrace of modern technology. From the outset, their design philosophy was not merely to record the actual Yangqin but to present a more artistic and versatile sound through meticulous recording, mixing, and adjustments. The goal was to create a virtual instrument that could seamlessly adapt to various genres, from video games and films to pop music, traditional Chinese compositions, and even electronic dance music, without sacrificing the inherent character and nuances of the Yangqin.

To achieve this ambitious vision, Three-Body Technology employed a multi-microphone recording technique, capturing the instrument’s rich tones from multiple perspectives. Two parallel microphones, positioned in a classic “A-B” configuration, were utilized for near-field recording, while a pair of microphones situated nearly 8 meters (26 feet) apart captured the mid-field ambiance. This audacious approach, rarely undertaken for an instrument of the Yangqin’s size, was a bold and calculated risk, but one that paid off handsomely, resulting in a virtual instrument that offers unparalleled tonal flexibility and customization options.

In a testament to Three-Body Technology’s commitment to authenticity, an exhaustive search was conducted to find the perfect microphones for this project. After auditioning a staggering 20 different microphones from various esteemed brands, the team made a surprising and unconventional choice: a pair of Chinese-brand microphones that captured the essence of the Yangqin’s bamboo and wood with unparalleled fidelity, delivering a truly authentic and captivating sonic experience.

The recording and mixing process was a meticulous undertaking, utilizing top-of-the-line equipment such as the SSL 9080, NEVE 1073 preamps, NEVE 33609 equalizers, Maag EQ, and an A-800 tape machine. Each component played a crucial role in shaping the final sound, ensuring that the nuances and character of the Yangqin were faithfully reproduced, while also imbuing the virtual instrument with a unique and artistic flair.

Raindrop & Blade is a true masterpiece, a virtual instrument that transcends boundaries and redefines what is possible in the realm of sample libraries. Whether you’re a composer seeking to evoke the rich cultural tapestry of ancient China, a film scorer in search of captivating and authentic textures, or a producer striving to infuse your electronic productions with a touch of tradition, Raindrop & Blade is an essential addition to your virtual instrument arsenal.

In an era where music production has become increasingly globalized, Three-Body Technology’s commitment to preserving and celebrating cultural heritage while embracing cutting-edge technology is a shining example of the power of innovation and artistic expression. Raindrop & Blade is more than just a virtual instrument; it is a sonic journey, a masterful fusion of tradition and modernity that invites you to explore new realms of creativity and push the boundaries of your artistic vision.
