I think I might have underestimated this plug-in. Max Shooter 49 over at Wave Crate just dropped this plug-in, Terrain. And at first, I thought this was going to be one of those plug-ins where you just click through a bunch of presets until you find something you like. But apparently, this thing has eight different sound engines, a built-in sampler, an effects side of the VST, modulation, and a whole patching system, which sounds crazy to me.
So Terrain is 150 bucks, one-time purchase, and I do appreciate that it’s not another subscription VST. They also give you a 10-day free trial, and that’s what I’m currently using. Now, I’m already a fan of Max Shooter’s sound design, but I’m not going to give this VST a pass just because I like its sounds. For 150 bucks, I need three things: good sounds, a workflow that doesn’t make me want to throw my mouse across the room, and something I can actually use in my beats I couldn’t do as easily before.
Terrain comes with a lot of cool sounding artist packs. Like a lot of new VSTs, it has a randomize feature, and to me random is pretty cool. Another thing that’s really cool is Capture, which records everything I’m playing, and that’s actually pretty dope. If you come up with something cool, you can just drag it from Capture into your DAW.
You get all these synths, you can make your own sounds, and you get CHOP in it. You can do this in FL Slicer too, but there’s a whole lot more options. It’s pretty solid. Terrain’s Patcher is almost like FL Patcher in a sense.
It’s a lot of variety. I don’t see you having to find another synth for a while. It has some pretty good strings and a couple of good pianos. As far as workflow goes, some stuff is intuitive, while other things you can’t just jump right into and figure out how to use everything. And the biggest question is if I’d spend 150 bucks for it. Well, if you are the type of producer that likes to experiment, this is a no-brainer. I would definitely buy it
